Taiwanese artist Gao Yuan presented in gallery “Balta”
With support from Lithuanian Ministry of Culture the Textile Artists’ Guild is opening a new international residency programme called “CONCEPT versus TECHNOLOGY”. From now on gallery “Balta” will be hosting up to 12 artists a year. Implementing their individual art projects participants of this programme will be collaborating and building connections with local community.
It is a pleasure to announce that in partnership with Kaunas Biennial gallery „Balta“ is presenting the first guest artist Gao Yuan (Taiwan) who was the receiver of Kaunas Biennial Grand Prix in 2011. By receiving this nomination Gao Yuan got an invitation for a personal display in Kaunas Biennial UNITEXT in 2013. The artist will be preparing for this exhibition during her residence in Kaunas. Until the end of October Gao Yuan will be working on photo series in collaboration with local artists. But in the mean time she needs to get to know our country, it‘s culture and contexts which will be directly connected to her future works.
In her works the artist speaks about society and it‘s culture in time of rapid economical growth and progressive transformations, about collisions between western and eastern cultures. Combination of western and eastern motives is a repetitive feature of Gao Yuan‘s works. The oriental nature of her photographs blossoms through the encoded traditional Chinese culture signs and the visual form enriched with symbolic references; the western tradition sneaks through the citations of classical compositions that were inspired by the artists’ fascination in the Italian paintings of renaissance.
During her residence the artist will be taking part in local events, meetings with artists and students will host some open doors in her studio (follow information on www.bienale.lt
September 21st 2012 at 17.00 we invite you to Gao Yuan’s presentation evening together with the opening ceremony of the international residency programme. During the event the artist will present the prize pieces and a few of her new artworks. Some honourable guests such as Ko Kuang-Yueh, Taipei Mission’s in The Republic of Latvia, which is one of this residency’s sponsors, representative in Latvia will be taking part in this opening. Also the event will be attended by the Mayor of Kaunas Andrius Kupcinskas.
